How to use the NHL team wheel
- Set the field. All 32 clubs start on the wheel. Tap Eastern or Western to drop a whole conference, tap a division such as Metropolitan to drop its eight teams, or tap a single crest to remove one club.
- Spin. Press the big button, tap the hub in the middle of the wheel, or just hit the space bar.
- Read the result. The wheel slows to a stop and the winning club appears with its crest, conference and division.
- Keep going if you need an order. Switch on Remove team after it is picked and each winner drops off the wheel, so a run of spins gives you 32 teams in a random order with no repeats.
What people use it for
- Choosing a franchise for NHL franchise mode, Be A GM or a rebuild challenge.
- Randomising the draft order in a hockey pool.
- Assigning clubs to players in a bracket or office pool so nobody gets to choose.
- Picking a team to follow for the season.
- Splitting a group into sides before a game of ball hockey or a shinny skate.
- Settling a friendly wager without anyone claiming first pick.
How the NHL is laid out on the wheel
The NHL runs sixteen clubs in each conference, split into two divisions of eight. The East holds the Atlantic (Bruins, Sabres, Red Wings, Panthers, Canadiens, Senators, Lightning, Maple Leafs) and Metropolitan (Hurricanes, Blue Jackets, Devils, Islanders, Rangers, Flyers, Penguins, Capitals). The West holds the Central (Blackhawks, Avalanche, Stars, Wild, Predators, Blues, Mammoth, Jets) and Pacific (Ducks, Flames, Oilers, Kings, Sharks, Kraken, Canucks, Golden Knights). Every wedge carries the club’s primary colour and crest.
Are the picks really random?
Yes. Every spin pulls a value from your browser’s cryptographic random number generator and rejects any value that would bias the outcome, so all 32 teams — or however many you left on the wheel — have exactly the same chance. The winner is chosen before the wheel starts turning; the animation simply drives to it. Nothing is weighted and no result is sent to a server.
